SEATTLE – Derek Holdsworth won his final race as a high
school athlete during Saturday’s Brooks RP Invitational meet held at Renton Memorial
Stadium in Washington.
The Lafayette High standout won the 800 meters with a
time of 1 minute 49.98 seconds to edge Texas’ Myles Marshall by more than a
second in the invitational-only meet.
Holdsworth, who usually likes to set the pace during his
races, chose a different approach Saturday. “The race was different from (New
Balance Outdoor) Nationals last week because I was really patient,” he said. I
waited until the right moment, like (Lafayette assistant coach Drew) Mearns had
told me.”

The victory marked the culmination of a sensational
senior season for Holdsworth. In February, he won state titles in the 300 and
500 meters at the Group 3A indoor track and field championships. He also
garnered All-American honors with a victory over Blacksburg’s Kenneth Hagan at
the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York City.
This spring, Holdsworth won the state title in the 800
meters. He also ran the anchor leg on the Rams’ state championship 4x800-meter
relay team. Last week, he set a Peninsula record with his victory in the 800
meters (1:49.36) at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held in Raleigh, North
Carolina.
He will continue his track career this fall at South
Plains (Texas) Junior College in Levelland.
