JAMES
CITY – Long-time college assistant coach Bobby Woollum has been announced as
the new basketball coach at Lafayette High School.
The
announcement was finalized Tuesday night at the Williamsburg-James City County
School Board meeting.
Woollum
has been a fixture in the Historic Triangle coaching circles for more nearly 30
years. He served as an assistant coach at W&M under his father, Charlie,
from 1994-2000. In addition, he was an assistant at George Mason University and
most recently at Western Carolina University. In 2009, he returned home to take a sales position at Russell Athletic in Richmond.
In
addition, he’s also coached youth basketball with the Colonial Capital
Basketball Club and more recently with the Virginia Venom.
Bryce
Losty, a rising senior guard, played for Woollum in middle school. “He gets
what he wants out of his players,” he said. “He can make the most out of
anything. I expect a great season at Lafayette and I think he can return our
basketball program to the top.”
Tyrek
Graham, a rising junior guard, agrees. “I heard his
defensive sets and schemes work pretty well,” he said. “That’s what we need to
have a good season. M expectations are
high.”
Woollum
becomes the fourth basketball coach in four seasons at Lafayette. Dan Downs, who served as the varsity coach in 2013-14 will serve as an assistant coach this fall.
