Warhill's Kasey Grainer verbally commits to play basketball.
JAMES CITY – Warhill’s Kasey Grainer has verbally committed to play basketball at Virginia Wesleyan College.

The 5-foot-9 senior forward averaged more than 14 points and nearly seven rebounds a game last season and earned Colonial Rivers Conference first-team honors. This summer, she was a key contributor for the Norfolk Xpress U16 team that played in tournaments in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

A three-year starter for the Lions, Grainer is excited about the opportunity to play at the next level. “College ball has always been my dream and I’m excited to fulfill that,” she said. “I hope to compete immediately for playing time.”

Grainer said that she had interest from approximately 10 programs before making her decision. “Ever since I saw Virginia Wesleyan, I fell in love with the whole campus and the whole team,” she said.

With a 4.06 grade-point average Grainer believes she will be challenged on the court and in the classroom. She will enroll in the school’s honors program and plans to double major in business and communications.

Grainer will become the third player in the program’s brief history to play college basketball, joining Forrest DeLuca (Alderson-Broaddus) and Alexis Petrin (Southern Virginia University).

“I love their focus on academics, but also their competitive program,” she said. “I felt as though this one was the perfect fit.”
