New look for football teams in 2013

High school football will have a different looks this fall, as four greater Williamsburg programs will have new uniforms.

Lafayette High will don new helmets and new uniforms when they open the season Friday, Aug. 29 at Sanford B. Wanner Stadium against Brunswick Senior High.

Their new helmets resemble those worn by the U.S. Naval Academy last year, featuring a three-tier look of white, gold and blue. The new headgear represents a change from the traditional navy blue helmets the Rams have worn for nearly a decade.

Lafayette High's new football helmets resemble Navy.
Seniors Brendan McGinty, Coleman Goad and Brendan Villanueva-Pernell were among the players that helped come up with the design.“I’m excited about the new look,” McGinty said. “We chose the Naval Academy design because it looked nice, plus the colors matched our (school colors).”

The design of the Lafayette uniforms will remain a mystery until the team steps on the field for warmups against Brunswick. “It’s a new look, for a new season,.” Villanueva-Pernell said.

Bruton and Warhill ushered in new coaches last week at the first day of practice. The two programs will upgrade their uniforms this season too. Jamestown coach Lee Williams announced that his team would also get new jerseys, but did not elaborate on the changes.

For home games, the Panthers will wear green jerseys with the trademark panther paw on each sleeve. The road jerseys will be white with green trim. Both jerseys will feature a more form-fitting look.

Bruton’s home jerseys will include an added feature – the player’s name on the back.

Warhill jerseys will resemble North Carolina.
“We just wanted to give them a different look,” said first-year coach Reggie Jones. “Last year, we changed the helmet color to white and added green and white pants. They like there name on the back as well. A lot of them say it reminds them of their days when they played (youth football) for the Williamsburg Hornets.”

Bruton senior Zack Uvodich is excited. “The jerseys are like the old ones they wore when they went to states (in 2009),” he said. Having our names on the back is a privilege and it makes us look more official.”

At Warhill, the silver and black uniforms will be replaced with white and Carolina blue. The white jerseys will include navy blue numbers and have ‘Warhill’ across the front. The Carolina blue jerseys will also feature navy blue numbers and will have ‘Lions” on the front.

“Most of the players seem pretty excited about them,” said senior Clayton Osterloh. “It means a lot that coach is preparing us for a new era with some good-looking uniforms. I really like the color scheme. I think we’ll be looking good in the Carolina blue.”
