William Bell, Matthew Shield lead Jamestown golf to third win

NEWPORT NEWS – William Bell held the No.1 honors for Jamestown High’s golf team during the Bay Rivers District opening round match last week at Williamsburg National.

The sophomore showed that top-tier talent Monday, earning a share of medalist honors during the third district match held at Kiln Creek Golf Club.

Bell shot a 2-over-par 38 through nine holes during a rain-shorten round. He joined teammate Matthew Shield, New Kent’s Cole Baldwin and Smithfield’s Mark Ogle to win top honors. Late thunderstorms didn’t allow some teams to finish so scores were limited to just nine holes.

The six Jamestown golfers finished within four strokes of one another, as the Eagles (157) edged New Kent (160) for their third straight victory. 

Dan Kelly carded a round of 40 for Jamestown. Alan Akins and Austin West shot a 41 and Emily Salamy finished with a 42

Cole Hitchcock and Bryce Parker posted 40’s for New Kent Jackson Gray finished with a 42, followed by Parker Williams (44) and Austin Pierce (45).

Smithfield (168) placed third, followed by Lafayette (172), York (176), Tabb (178), Grafton (181), Warhill (186), Bruton (188) and Poquoson (195).

Jacob Smethurst posted another solid round for Lafayette, leading the team with a 40 Tawni Hatcher finished with a 41, followed by Jordan Olsen (44), Conor Flannery (47), Logan Smith (47) and Harry Grinier (51).

For Warhill, Austin Beaulieu and Bryce Parker tallied rounds of 45 to lead the charge Peter Conway and Cole Siegel each finished with a 48. Other contributors included Ryan Creecy (40) and Blake Sawyer (56)

Bruton turned its best outing of the season on Monday. Tyler Floyd led the Panthers with a round of 44. Wyatt Baldasare and Dylan Jenkins both finished with a 47. Jacob Calloway posted a 50, followed by birthday boy Zack Calloway (52) and Tommy Betro.

The victory gives Jamestown (789) now gives the Eagles a 13-stroke lead over New Kent (802) in the regular season standings. Lafayette (864) was third, followed by Smithfield (877) Tabb (939), Warhill (955), Grafton (969), York (970), Poquoson (1,014) and Bruton (1,023).

Williams (77.60) heads the list of golfers in the race for district medalist honors. Shield (78.00) is just behind him, followed by Bell (78.40), Hitchcock (69.20), Salamy (79.60) and Kelly (79.60).

The teams will be back in action Thursday when they play match No. 4 at Colonial Heritage Golf Club. Tee time is 10 a.m.
