Greensprings Gators captured second straight VPSU title

Greensprings Gators swim team captured its 2nd VPSU title.
FORT EUSTIS – Greensprings Gators captured its second Virginia Peninsula Swim Union championship meet title in a row Sunday afternoon at Fort Eustis Aquatic Center.

Kallyn Buirski posted victories in all three events she participated in the girls 7-8 division. Buirski won the 25-meter freestyle (16.57), 250 backstroke (20.75) and 25 breaststroke (22.88). She also swam the anchor leg on the Gators 200-medley relay (2:28.65).

Greensprings (1,160 points) edged Kingswood (1,052.50) and Kingsmill (1,009.50) for the team title. Queens Lake (932) was fourth followed by Coventry (702), Windsor Forest (701.50), Stonehouse (588.50), First Colony (582) and Wellington (429.50).

“We had a lot of great swims,” said Greensprings assistant coach Allie Christy. “Our little kids swam their hearts out and our 11-12 girls rocked it.”

Shea Buirski, Kailey Carvajal, and Kylie Johnson earned Top 3 finishes in the girls 11-12 division. Britney Denny was a force in the girls 9-10 division and Austin Smith was a key component for the boys 11-12 group. .

Jason Covaney, Ryan Boll and Matt Cudzik were the catalyst for Greensprings in the older division. Covaney and Cudzik swan the final two legs to win the 200-freestyle relay (1:55.46). He was also second in the 50 freestyle, fourth in the 50 butterfly and fifth in the 50 backstroke in the 13-14 division.

“I think this team has grown because of the motivation the coaches gave and how everyone was willing to put in the hard work,” Covaney said. “Coach Alex (Montes de Oca), along with Allie Christy, offered a lot of new insights. They also added fun to practice.”

Carter Burrows (Kingsmill), Colby Hurt (Ford’s Colony), Joelle Vereb (First Colony), Caleb Aman (Windsor Forest), Jessie Beattie (Queens Lake) and Carter Kale (Windsor Forest) also earned triple-winner status for their respective teams.
