WILLIAMSBURG
– Frank Sluss noted that his Williamsburg Starz U16 team played its best game
of the week Wednesday during the first round of bracket play at the National
Softball Association Class B World Series.
Sluss
and his team was not as excited about their performance Wednesday morning, as
the Starz dropped an 8-0 decision to the Seneca Magic from Buffalo, New York.
Monica
Moses had two hits and drove in two runs as West Seneca handed Williamsburg its
first loss in tournament play.
The
Magic scored runs in each of the first four innings to secure the win. With
runners on second and third, Moses ripped a double to the gap in right-center
field to for a two-run triple. She scored two pitches later to give her team a
3-0 lead.
West
Seneca extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning. Joelle Kaminski led off
with a double and scored on a passed ball.
Williamsburg
tried to answer in the bottom of the inning. Leslie Whiting and Kelsey Sluss
reached on back-to-back singles against West Seneca starter Brianna Chambers to
lead off the inning. Chambers calmly retired the next three batters in order,
including a pair of strikeouts, to get out of the jam.
The
Magic added to their lead with two runs in the third. Chambers scored on a wild
pitch and Moses came scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Williamsburg
loaded the bases again with one out in the bottom of the third, as Ashley
Cordner singled and Kaleigh Arnett and Lydia Albrecht walked. Facing the heart
of the Starz lineup, Chambers induced a pair of easy pop ups to the middle
infield to get out of the jam.
West
Seneca added two more insurance runs in the fourth as Karly Kurkowiak and Lacey
Gueino scored on wild pitches.
Chambers
scattered four hits and struck out four to earn the complete-game shutout.
