Williamsburg Post 39 defeated Vienna Post 180 by forfeit. |
PURCEVILLE
– Williamsburg Post 39 baseball team notched its 20th win of the
season Wednesday morning without throwing a pitch.
Vienna
Post 180 was forced to forfeit their elimination game with the Wildflowers
because they did not have enough players. Post 180 started the tournament with
10 players and had one go down with an injury Tuesday night in a 3-1 loss to
Albermarle Post 74. On Wednesday, they had a player that had to take an early
class for college.
Coach
Tom Richardson said it was unfortunate, but it’s the nature of the beast this
time of year. “It’s not ideal, but we’ll take it,” he said. “We want to
celebrate our first tournament win.”
After
using five pitchers against Stafford Post 291 Nationals in the opener, Wednesday’s
forfeit was big for Post 39. Per American Legion rules, pitchers are limited to
12 innings over three days.
“I’m
sure the other teams aren’t going to be happy that we won a game without
throwing a pitch,” he said. “It helps us from that tournament standpoint that
we didn’t have to use any pitching. It’s like we won a game last night and lost
today, so our pitching is still the same.”
Kent
Klyman, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, is expected to start Thursday
against the loser of Wednesday’s Leesburg Post 34 and West End Post 361 from
Richmond. Game time is 9 a.m.
“We’re
in an all hands on deck mode,” Richardson said. “Botey (Blake Otey) will be
loose and ready to go and so will Brummy, (Michael Brumfield) and Willsy (Blake
Wills). Plus it will keep us one day closer to getting Matt (Smith) back.”
For
now, the Wildflowers are happy to be playing. “We’re in survive and advance
mode,” Richardson son. “This gives us a chance to go and relax and spend more
time with one another. This is a special group of players and a special group
of coaches.”
