RICHMOND
– Summer break has reached the halfway point for most students, but for Carter
Kale it’s just begun.
The
Lafayette High senior secured a trip to Irvine, California next month to
compete in the United States Swimming Speedo Junior Nationals held at the
William Woolett Jr. Aquatic Center.
Kale
earned a berth in the high-profile meet with a strong performance in the 200
butterfly Saturday at the Virginia State Senior Long Course Championships meet
held at Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond.
He
earned a US Swimming cut time of 2 minutes, 5.21 seconds to finish second in
the event in the preliminaries of the 200 fly. He will participate in the
finals later Saturday night as well as the 1,600 meter freestyle.
“I’m
very excited to be going (to Junior Nationals),” Kale said. “I missed the cut
three seasons in a row, so it’s nice to have finally made the time.”
Kale
represented the Williamsburg Aquatic Club at this meet. He participated in the
200 freestyle and the 400 individual medley, but really wasn’t satisfied with
his performance. “My races weren’t all bad,” he said. “They just weren’t what I
wanted them to be.”
An
all-state performer at Lafayette, Kale said this ranks as one of his largest
accomplishments. “The (200 fly) was by far my best race this weekend,” he said.
“Reaching Junior Nationals was definitely a huge goal of mine.”
