Williamsburg Starz 16U dominate in World Series opener

WILLIAMSBURG – Williamsburg Starz U16 softball team opened the National Softball Association Class B 2014 World Series play with a dominating 12-2 victory over Wreckers So

The Starz scored five runs in the first inning and added seven more in the third to secure the double-digit victory at Quarterpath Park Field 3.

Cleanup hitter Leslie Whiting led the charge with two hits and a game-high five runs batted in. The Newport News native had opened the scoring with a bases-loaded double to the gap in left-center. Two innings later, she drove in two more with a single up the middle. Whiting also scored two runs.

Leadoff hitter Kaleigh Arnett reached base three times, including a pair of singles, and scored three runs. Ashley Cordner added two hits d two runs.

Kelsey Sluss and Jennifer Burton each contributed two this and a run scored. Meghan Boyd went 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

Delaney Morris allowed two runs on five hits.
Delaney Morris scattered two runs on five hits and struck out two to earn the victory in the circle.

Jessica Riis had two hits and scored a run for the Wreckers. Kawaipunahele Cole singled and scored on an RBI-double by Hayley Thompson in the third inning.

Williamsburg Starz will close out pool play Tuesday morning with a showdown against Team Mizuno Sheriff from New York. Game time is 9 a.m. at Quarterpath Park Field 2.
