WILLIAMSBURG
– The Williamsburg Starz 16U softball team finished in third place during this
week’s National Softball Association Class B World Series held in Williamsburg.
The
local team secured a Top 3 finish Friday with a tremendous run through the last
two days of the tournament.
After
a disappointing 8-0 loss to the West Seneca Magic on Thursday morning, the Starz
rallied to defeat the Virginia BatBusters later in the evening at Quarterpath
Park to stay alive in the tournament.
On
Friday, Williamsburg scored five runs in the first inning en route to an 11-2 victory
over the Ohio Passion at Kiwanis Par in
another elimination game to earn a rematch with the Magic.
West
Seneca opened the scoring with an unearned run in the Top of the 4th
inning. Williamsburg answered in the
bottom of the frame as Ashley Cordner scored from third on a wild pitch to tie
the game at 1-1.
The
Magic scored a run in the fifth inning and added two more unearned runs to
build a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth. Williamsburg got the first
two runners on in the inning, but Briana Chambers got some great defense from
her infield to get out of the inning without a run.
West
Seneca tacked on another run in the seventh inning as another runner scored on
a wild pitch for a 5-1 advantage.
Williamsburg
didn’t go away quietly. The Starz had runners on second and third with two outs
in the bottom of the inning. Kaleigh Arnett hit a three-run blast over the
fence in left-centerfield to cut the lead to 5-4.
The
Starz were unable to come all the way back, as Chambers got the next batter to
fly out to the third baseman to end the game.
