SALEM – Jamestown’s Sean Hughes and Evan Lowery were key
contributors for the East Region all-stars during Friday’s 7-0 victory over the
Central Region all-stars at the 2014 Subway Commonwealth Games held at Kiwanis
Field.
Hughes scattered two hits and struck out a game-high 11
in six shutout innings of work to earn the tournament victory. Offensively,
Lowery had three hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs during the
opening day of the tournament.
The team is coached by York High baseball skipper Rusty
Ingram and features several players from York County. Grafton’s Jordan Sprouse and York High’s Trey
Kurtyka and Eric Harp are also members of this tournament squad that includes
the top high school players in Virginia, age 15-17.
The East all-stars will complete round-robin play
Saturday with games against the North (noon) and South (2:30 p.m.) squads. The tournament
will wrap-up on Sunday with a pair of medal round games.
