WILLIAMSBURG – Abby Cryts has committed to play field
hockey at Christopher Newport University.
The Walsingham Academy rising senior made the
announcement last week after a standout performance during the Commonwealth
Games.
“Playing field hockey in college has been a dream of mine
for the past couple of years,” she said. “Being able to play in college means
everything to me.”
Cryts was the focal point of the Trojans’ offense last
season at her right midfield spot. She led the team with five goals and two
assists and earned first-team, Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools
honors.
She said she received offers from a number of schools,
including a walk-on opportunity at the College of William and Mary, but felt
very comfortable at CNU.
“I looked at a few other colleges, but knew from the
beginning CNU is where I wanted to end up,” she said. “It’s a great school and
the field hockey team is amazing. They made it to
the [Division III] Final Four
last year and they have great coaches and player that are welcoming and
dedicated to push you. I wanted to be a part of an atmosphere like that, so
having the opportunity to play [in that environment] is amazing.”
Cryts said she plans to major in criminology and minor in
business at CNU. She wanted to make her college decision early, so she could
enjoy her senior year at Walsingham.
As for playing time, Cryts said she’s ready for any role
she’s handed. “I know the coach plays the hardest working and dedicated
players,” she said. “I’m going to need to put in a lot of hard work and commitment,
but it will be worth it.
