JAMES
CITY – Pat Daly has verbally committed to play Division I baseball at Mount St.
Mary’s University in Maryland.
Daly
made the announcement Monday after touring several different programs. “They
were my first two-way offer, so they were at the top of my list I’ve always
loved to pitch and play the outfield, so when they gave me a good offer, it
caught my attention.”
He
also had offers from Virginia Teach, Old Dominion University and Virginia
Commonwealth University. “The bigger schools looked at me to strictly pitch,
but if I had the choice, I would definitely love to do both,” he said. “I chose
The Mount because they’re a great school athletically and academically.”
The
6-foot-4 rising senior has been a fixture in the lineup for Warhill High’s
baseball team for the last two seasons. As a sophomore, he batted .294 with 10
RBI and scored 10 runs for a Lions team that earned its first state tournament
berth.
Daly
battled through an inflamed rotator cuff as a junior, playing most of the
season with an injured shoulder. He batted .200 with seven runs scored and
drove in seven runs. The lefty pitched in four games for the Lions this spring
before suffering the injury, including an 11 strikeout performance against York
After
two months of rest, he pitched again summer on the travel baseball circuit with
the Evoshield Canes. “My arm is feeling 100 percent again,” he said.
Daly,
who plans to major in sports management, said he’s happy with his decision. “My
goal was to commit before high school season,” he said. “I love that I found
the Mount before the end of the summer. It takes a lot of stress off and now I
can focus on the upcoming high school season.”
