Williamsburg Post 39 reaches District 3 title game

By John Harvey

Blake Otey improved to 3-0 on the season.
JAMES CITY – Another year, another chance to play for a District 3 championship for Williamsburg Post 39.

The Wildflowers secured their third straight tournament finals appearance Tuesday night with a 13-3 victory over Poquoson Post 273 in a game held at Warhill High School.

Mikey Anerton went 3-for-4 and drove in a game-high five runs as Williamsburg (18-0) remained unbeaten on the season. The West Point High product is one of four current players to win a title with Post 39, joining Blake Wills, Tyler Klinedinst and Thomas Richardson.

“It feels great to play for a third consecutive title,” Anerton said. “We know how tough it is to win a championship and we’re very excited.”

Mikey Anerton drove in five runs for Post 39.
Poquoson Post 273 opened the scoring in the first inning with some two-out lightning. Trevor Kelly reached on a two-base error and scored on an RBI-single from P.J. Jackson for a 1-0 lead.

Williamsburg responded with a run in its first at bat. Klinedinst doubled with one out and moved to third on an error. Anerton followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Klinedinst and tie the game at 1-1.

Post 39 took their first lead with a four-run third inning. Anerton drove in two runs with a double. Klinedinst and Jordan Hackney added run-scoring singles for a 5-1 lead.
Williamsburg Post 39 is now 18-0 on the season.
“We seem to get going after a team scores against us which shows a lot for out character,” Anerton said. “We don't roll over if a team gets ahead. We have a strong lineup and great depth on the bench and it seems once we go through the order, we get a judge on the pitcher.”
Poquoson got a run back in the fourth inning. Kelly walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Jackson singled to center to cut the lead to 5-2. Post 39’s defense stopped the rally there, as Kent Klyman turned a line drive at first into a triple play to help starter Blake Otey get out of a bases loaded jam.

Williamsburg scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 8-2. Matt Smith and Austin Carter had RBI-doubles. McCray added a run-scoring single.

Poquoson added a run in the fifth to trim the lead to 8-3, but the Wildflowers closed out the win with a five-run seventh inning.

Klinedinst went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and 2 RBI. Smith had three hits and scored three runs. Carter finished with two hits, a pair of runs scored and 2 RBI.

Otey allowed an earned run on three hits and struck out three in five innings to earn his third win of the season. Brumfield struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief.

Williamsburg Post 39 will play the winner of Poquoson Post 273 and Gloucester Post 75 in Wednesday’s elimination game.

Coach Thomas Richardson said this group is special.

“We have respect and a genuine family atmosphere,” he said. “We have two junior teams that play hard and want to play up. I care about these guys all the time, not just game night.”

“(Playing for a title) means a ton,” Richardson added. We have worked hard for 13 years at making sure that we do things the right way.”
